Cry – The New VB Commercials

September 3rd, 2010 by Nate

Those regular readers will know that I’m an Aussie guy living in Europe. Thus when I get to see a bit of home, especially something related the beer from the homeland, I’m only happy to share it.

I should note, that I don’t particularly like VB. Nor am I being paid to publish this video.

I will let the ad speak for itself, however it’s a nice hark back to the masculine drinking ways.

If the video no longer works, be sure to check out VB.com.au.

Fosters Ad

March 5th, 2010 by Nate

Any Aussie you meet in the world will tell you that we would not even give Fosters to our dogs (let alone be able to find it in a drinking establishment). Anyway, that is neither here nor there. The above advertisement and the rest of the “How to speak Australian” are brilliant.

Just wanted to share.

Happy Australia Day

January 26th, 2010 by Nate

As an Aussie living in a foreign land, there aren’t to many men from Brussels handing out Vegimite Sandwiches.
None the less, when you do find a little bit of your homeland it is relieving and exciting.

Today is my nation’s day of celebration. Similar to that of Bastille Day or the 4th of July, it is essentially a day to celebrate being a country.

Cheers!

Consequently due to the history of Australia, there are some beliefs that this is also ‘invasion day’, as the 26th of January commemorates the landing of the First Fleet on this day in 1788. I am in a little of both minds, yes it was the day the native Australia was invaded. There should not be any argument on that. I also have grown up with this day being a celebration of being Australian, whatever creed, colour, background, religion that you may be. Maybe both issues should be dealt with together, hand-in-hand.

Anyway, that is enough of the history lesson. If you’d like to know more, please check out the Wikipedia article on the day.

The photo above is of the Coopers Pale Ale, my favourite ‘mass-produced’ Australian beer (taken with my phone’s camera). Anyone who’s visited this site previously will have probably seen my older posts about it. So today I’m not reviewing the beer, I’m just sharing it with you. If we could all have a beer and chill out, I think things everywhere could be better.

Oh and I did find this beer at the Drinks of the World store at the Basel Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) and the photo taken a small amount of time after, whilst waiting for my train.

Aussie Beer Sizes

January 22nd, 2010 by Nate

Being an Aussie and one that has been around the land, I can say that the lack of standardisation through the states on beer glasses can be bloody confusing. The above photo which I believe is quite old, yet something that I’ve only just managed to stumble upon puts it all in perspective.

Note: I am not a supporter of VB beer or Carlton and United Breweries, but they did put this graphic together so I will pay credit where credit is due.

Thanks to Alan for posting this.

Stone and Wood

January 13th, 2010 by Nate

I’m not a big fan of Byron Bay. Yes it is beautiful. Yes it is situated in amazing location on the mid east coast of Australia. Yes it has amazing beaches. BUT however beautiful it might be the, ahh, lets call them the local thugs have not been so kind and welcoming to people such as myself. Having said all of that, an absolute champion of a mate recently visited Byron on a trip to the great southern land and picked up the above ‘sixer’ of the local Byron Bay bier.

Now let me put this into perspective. My mate lives in Germany and he purchased the beer on a road trip from Brisbane to Sydney and then somehow pack them for for a flight to Melbourne followed by the return flight to Germany. The end result:
All 6 survived the entire trip. Now isn’t the idea or notion of the journey these beers went on fantastic? Such a thought only goes to improve the experience wit these beers. On it’s their own the beer is simply a typical Aussie pale lager. However it does have a nice clean, malty finish. Nothing spectacular, but knowing the adventure these beers have been through, it only made it ohhhhh so worth while! After all that is what this site is about, the great drinking adventure.

Cheers to my boy J for the efforts to bring the beer to Germany. I very much enjoyed knocking them back whilst watching Something Something Dark Side.

International Beer Challenge 2009

October 21st, 2009 by Nate

International Beer Challenge Logo

International Beer Challenge Logo

2009′s International Beer Challenge results have been released. The winners are as below:

Supreme Champion
Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier

Class Winners
Best Ale: Fyne Ales Highlander
Best Lager: Boston Beer Samuel Adams Traditional Bock
Best Stout or Porter: Harveys Prince of Denmark
Best Wheat Beer: Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier
Best Fruit Beer: Redoak Framboise Froment
Best Speciality Beer: Thornbridge Bracia
Best No- or Low-Alcohol Beer: Harveys Bill Brewer

You can find the full list of award winners here

I’m interested by the results. Mainly as I’ve only personally tried (but not reviewed) the Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier and the Boston Beer Samuel Adams Traditional Bock. Neither of these are bad beers, on the contrary they are very, VERY good beers. None the less, the results had me looking through the conditions of entry, which to be honest are quite fair.

Of the two beers that I’ve tasted, I do believe they are good, I just don’t know if they are the best beers available. However as the old platitude says, “you’ve to to be in it to win it”. And many of the beers that I would have considered competitive at this level just have not submitted their wares.

None the less, cheers to the winners. I will try and review as many of these as I can over the coming months. This may be a challenge given the geographical isolation of some of the brands (and that I’m in Switzerland), but lets see how that goes.

Can anyone recommend a good distributor in Switzerland? Or if anyone will be visiting soon, can you bring some of the award winning beer with you? Please? :-)

This will be my last post on Bier Adventures from Australia. I look forward to sharing the worlds beers with you from my new home in Germany.

See you all soon.

Coopers Vintage

December 15th, 2006 by Nate

Vintage

I picked up a couple of this seasonal brew the other day. Apparently Coopers creates this beer every year in September. It has a similar alcohol texture and taste to a bock, but still enjoys that rich Coopers ale flavour.

I really enjoyed this beer. It would be great to sip over dinner rather than to drink at the pub.

On a side note, I am leaving Sydney & for that matter Australia at the end of December. I am moving to Frankfurt, Germany to take up a new job there.

The site will continue to function and will mainly contain information about biers from Germany & Europe. And maybe a few Aussie beers when I can :-)

The above shot shows what should happen to poorly made beer. In this case a Toheeys New has been shown the exit.

Coopers on Tap

December 12th, 2006 by Nate

IMG_5186

Of the main stream Australian beers I am a huge fan of the South Australian made Coopers Pale Ale. I think it has something to do with the fact that unlike most of the so-called main stream beers, there are no preservatives in Pale Ale.

Note the distinctive “Frosted Tap”. Somewhat of an advertising invention and visual representation of ‘cold beer’.
