Lichtenstein Helles

Earlier this year I visited the small river side Principality of Lichtenstein. During my trip, I tried the local brew from the relatively newly created (2007) brewery, theLichtenstein Brauhaus.

The above bier is the what in German essentially means “Pale Lager” or in countries such as Australia would be called “beer”. This the basic, gold-coloured, father style of modern beer, is the essential base in which most beer today is modeled. Originally brewed in Germany in the 1820′s, this beer style has been modified and changed with cultural interpretations that have led to some of the best (Pilsner Urquell) and worst (Budweiser) biers in the world.

This is also the basic type of bier that I will be drinking next week at the Oktoberfest :-)

None the less, the Lichtenstein Brauhaus version was surprisingly good and one I will happily recommend to anyone visiting Principality to obtain your souvenir stamp. 4 Steins.

Happy Anniversary Arthur

September 25th, 2009 by Nate

250 years ago today Mr. Arthur Guinness brewed his first pint of the “steak in a glass”. It’s certainly a classic, popular and important member of the beer family. Although I’m not a huge fan, I do indulge in the stout on a few occasions (most notably St. Patrick’s Day) and have nothing but the utmost admiration for the drink and it’s history.

Here’s to the momentous event of hitting to 250. I’ll be sure to have a pint tonight in celebration.

Oh, I should mention that the current photo is not one of mine. I’ll be sure to grab a picture tonight and replace it later.

Cheers.

Moonlight Peroni

Having recently spent some time Italy, it’s only appropriate that I provide a report on the Birra consumed there. My first indulgence is with the Peroni. This most popular of Italian lagers is light, pale and perfectly refreshing, not to mention being served up in a 660ml bottle. Of all the Italian birra that was consumed whilst relaxing by Mediterranean this was my favourite, thus I’m giving this 4 steins.

Frankfurt Footy Binding

Recently, I visited Frankfurt to see my footy (thats Aussie Rules footy) team, the Frankfurt Redbacks smash the Hamburg Dockers in the final round of the AFLG regular season. I previously played for Redbacks when I was an occupant of the stadt of Frankfurt and it was great to get be there and see them get the win!

I wasn’t playing this weekend, so I sat sideline with bier hand. Binding is the local Frankfurt brew and stablemate of the ‘furt for almost 150 years. The bier is a solid Pils, nothing exciting but good none the less with the typical hops flavour and a nice, although slightly dimmed, bitterness. It’s the standard bier to be found in the most pubs, sports grounds and trinkhallen throughout Frankfurt. It truly is the ‘Frankfurt Bier’.

Allgäuer Weiss

September 5th, 2009 by Nate

Today’s Weißbier is from the Allgäuer brewery in the small Bavarian town of Marktoberdorf: Leuterschach. I happened to come across this bier being served not in Bavaria but in the Gundelhard forest, at a cute little guesthouse.

Random location and random bier. Now I dind’t mind this bier, but it just seemed to be lacking in depth. The initial flavour was your typical hefeweizen, but the aftertaste really lacked the quality of a good hefeweizen. Now this could be because I was exhausted after a long weekend, so I’m not going to say this is a bad bier. Infact such a statement would not be 100% honest. The bier was good, but I need to re-evaluate to make my mind up.

If any of you reading this is a Allgäuer representative, I’d be happy to test another one again. Drop me a line and we’ll discuss it.

As I can’t really give an accurate evaluation of the bier, I’m going to leave this as ‘undefined’ for the moment.

Après-midi Schneider

I spent the last weekend partying with friends in Frankfurt . Late on Sunday afternoon I was offered this little Bavarian gem to chill out with. This Schneider Weisse is the original bier from the brewery (brauerei) first started by Georg I. Schneider in 1872.

This has to be without doubt one of my favourite biers ever created. Unlike most golden Weißbier, this has a much stronger amber colour which indicates the strength and complexity of flavour, which is not dissimilar to other Weißbier, but has more of a nutty and heartier, less sweet fruit flavour.

Undoubtedly this is amongst the kings of biers and easily gets 5 Steins:
