K9 Ale

January 16th, 2010 by Nate

I’ve been reading reviews of the American selections of craft and micro beers on many a blog for the last few months. Which was quite unfortunate as I could not get my hands on any of them. That was until I visited the Drinks of the World shop in Basel, where I purchased the above Flying Dog K9 Beer.

The story here is pretty cool as there is a firm in the Netherlands that directly imports and distributes this beer to the European region, which I am grateful for. I appreciate getting my hands on beers from other corners of the beer planet.

As for the Beer, I can tell you it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t super either. There was a strong Hoppy flavour and an equally strong 6.4% alcohol content. The beer was more carbonated than a traditional English Ale, but I wasn’t expecting it to be like pint of Young’s. I can’t put my finger on it, but it was lacking something. I’m really not sure what it was. It didn’t seem to have the malty flavours that I though it would. It could be that my expectations were a little elevated due to all of the blog talks of the Winter and Christmas Beers being brewed in the USA. Also what did capture my attention that had it not been for the bottle I could have sworn I was drinking an overly carbonated and slightly strong English ale. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as Flying Dog have obviously have their ale brew style perfected, but I guess I was hoping for something different, certainly more of the advertised malty flavour. It could be an American thing versus what I’m used to. It could be that I have a dud bottle of beer. Or, more than likely, I was expecting something different & that kind of what made it, in a conversely confusing, interesting.
